Mizrach means East,and the placard indiated the direction-to the site of the HolyTemple in jerusalem-to which jewish hearts were directed constantly and which jews faced during ther daily prayers.the placard served also as a talisman to protect the building and its occupants from illness and accidents .often the single word mizrach was drawn on paper or parchment,or crocheted on cloth,and richly illuminated.
